Doctors Form Union

Primary care doctors, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants at Banner Health voted 149-66 to unionize, forming what organizers call Arizona’s first physicians’ union.

The National Labor Relations Board counted ballots Wednesday in Phoenix, with about 250 medical personnel eligible to vote across the health system’s Valley primary care practices.

Union organizers cited rising administrative workloads, staffing levels, and pay tied to performance metrics they say are unfairly calculated.

Banner Health officials said they respect the decision and will consider next steps if the labor board certifies the results.

Hikers Recount Flood

Hikers airlifted from the Grand Canyon described a storm of generational proportions that brought 40 mph winds, hail, and torrential rain within minutes.

“We saw basically the flood, waterfalls coming up out of nowhere, boulders, mud, landslides happening everywhere,” said Dr. Parth Desai, who was with a group of other doctors when the storm hit.

Rangers moved dozens of people at Phantom Ranch to safer ground before bridges gave way, a step one hiker credited with preventing more deaths. Two hikers died and one remains missing. More than 80 people were evacuated, most by air.

Washed-out footbridges and a damaged pipeline shut South Rim lodging indefinitely. Meanwhile, about 2,000 park residents are unsure how long their drinking water will last while the National Park Service assesses the damage.

Peak Holiday Travel Ahead

State transportation officials expect heavy holiday traffic this afternoon and again Monday as the Labor Day weekend gets underway.

The heat will continue, with daily high temperatures in the Valley expected to top 100 degrees today through Monday.

Tropical moisture from Hurricane Marie raises storm chances in parts of the state, with a higher flash-flood risk in southeastern Arizona.

State and local police agencies will run DUI enforcement details through the long weekend, and the state transportation department will suspend road construction this afternoon through Monday.
