Article Icon 1Learjet Crash Prompts Safety Checks

The National Transportation Safety Board urged nearly 2,000 Learjet owners to inspect the planes’ landing gears, citing a fatal crash in February at Scottsdale Airport.

The NTSB, which criticized a Federal Aviation Administration decision against mandating the inspections, recommended visual checks of the landing gear’s retaining bolt and trunnion pin.

To date, about 12% of the nearly 2,000 planes targeted for inspection have been checked, despite manufacturer Bombardier’s recommendations and previous repairs, the safety board said.

In the February crash, a pilot was killed and three others injured when a Learjet 35A veered off the runway after landing and collided with a business jet parked at the airport. The Learjet was owned by Motley Crue singer Vince Neil, who was not on board.

No. 13 Arizona hopes to make another deep run into March as the college basketball season gets started on Monday, with the Wildcats opening against No. 3 Florida in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Arizona State will embark on a full rebuild under coach Bobby Hurley with 14 new players, including international transfers.

Northern Arizona looks to build on last season’s 18-win campaign, relying on three key returners and six experienced transfers to chase a postseason return.

Arizona, which reached the Sweet 16 of last season’s NCAA Tournament, returns key players Jaden Bradley and Motiejus Krivas. Gone from last year’s squad are Carter Bryant and Caleb Love, both of whom turned professional.

An anonymous person donated to the Salvation Army by dropping a 2.5-gram gold tooth into a Red Kettle in the town of Quartzsite, the second such donation there in four years.

Whoever blessed us with this creative gift, we thank them from the bottom of our hearts,” said Lt. Colonel Charles Fowler of The Salvation Army Southwest Division.

Valued at about $100, the unusual gift took its place among the coins and bills that typically fill kettles each holiday season, with proceeds supporting local programs for people in need.

In 2021, someone dropped a gold tooth worth about $300 into a kettle in Quartzsite, known as the Rock Capital of the World.
