Gov. Katie Hobbs said the state will not help pay to keep the Grand Canyon National Park fully operational during the partial federal government shutdown, leaving the possibility of limited services or closures.

In 2023, Hobbs pledged to tap lottery revenue to help keep the Grand Canyon open during a shutdown threat under the Biden administration. A spokesman said the Democratic governor’s position changed due to opposition to Republican spending plans.

During a federal shutdown from December 2018 to January 2019, then-Gov. Doug Ducey, a Republican, authorized spending an average of $64,000 a week in state funds to assist the Grand Canyon.

State lawmakers on Wednesday held a special hearing in the aftermath of a Medicaid scheme that defrauded Arizona of an estimated $2.8 billion.

The scheme involved sober living homes billing for addiction treatment that never occurred.

Lawmakers questioned state Medicaid officials about the program’s management, with state Sen. Carine Werner, R-Scottsdale, asking if any state personnel were held accountable for any lapses. An official declined to comment.

Advocates for sober living homes, including sober living program founder Robert Harris, said they seek reforms focused on accountability and long-term recovery support.

Amazon paused its Prime Air drone deliveries after two drones crashed into a crane in a Tolleson business park on Wednesday morning.

The collisions occurred within moments of each other near Roosevelt Street, with one drone crash-landing in the same parking lot as the crane, and the other in a nearby lot.

Footage from the scene shows one of the damaged drones on fire, which led to one person being evaluated for fume inhalation.

Federal agencies opened investigations.
