Article Icon 1Sullivan Named U.S. Capitol Police Chief

Michael Sullivan, the former interim police chief in Phoenix from 2022 until April, was named U.S. Capitol Police Chief and will be sworn in on June 30.

The decision marks the second time in four years that an outsider was chosen over tenured U.S. Capitol officers, including interim chief Sean Gallagher.

The Capitol Police Board expressed confidence in Sullivan, breaking with the views of the Phoenix Police Union, which had opposed Sullivan’s bid for the permanent chief’s job in Phoenix.

Sullivan said that the Phoenix police union’s motive may have been politically motivated.

Article Icon 1 Laughing Gas Misuse in Focus

Reports indicate the use of nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, may be on the rise among young people in Arizona due to its ease of purchase and use as a recreational drug.

Officials warned that inhaling the gas can lead to serious health problems, including asphyxiation, blood clots, frostbite, and paralysis.

Unlike some states that ban the retail sale of nitrous oxide, Arizona imposes an age restriction on purchases. The gas is sold under brand names like Galaxy Gas, Miami Magic, and HotWhip.

Last June, police bodycam footage showed a father being arrested for giving nitrous oxide to his young sons, aged 12 and 13, who then took to social media to post about the experience.

Article Icon 1Suns Hire Ott as Head Coach

The Phoenix Suns hired Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Jordan Ott as head coach, marking the team’s fourth leadership change in four seasons.

Ott replaces Mike Budenholzer, who was fired after the team posted a 36-46 record despite the most expensive roster in NBA history.

Ott landed the job after the search was narrowed to him and Johnnie Bryant, who worked with Ott as an associate coach in Cleveland.

Fans and sports analysts voiced mixed reactions on the hiring, with some criticizing team owner Mat Ishbia’s decision-making abilities.
