A man accused of killing his mother and stepfather—both members of the Arizona Rangers law enforcement auxiliary—was fatally shot during a standoff with Missouri state troopers on Tuesday in Missouri, authorities said.

Francis Alcantar-Chavez, 23, allegedly shot and killed his mother, Cynthia Templeton, 53, and stepfather, Troy Templeton, 62, in Taylor before fleeing the state. His motive was not immediately known.

The couple was found inside their home by Cynthia Templeton’s ex-husband, who is Alcantar-Chavez’s father. The ex-husband was returning two of the couple’s other children to the home.

In Missouri, Alcantar-Chavez was shot by state troopers when he opened fire on them after crashing his motorcycle during a chase. One trooper was hospitalized with minor injuries.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said his department “dropped the ball” in failing to forewarn startled South Tucson residents about a military and police training exercise Tuesday night.

The training by Pima Regional SWAT took place at an abandoned school, and prompted residents to report helicopters, loud booms, and “smoke bombs” near their homes.

The training was conducted in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Defense. Similar training took place in Phoenix this week.

Although Nanos apologized, he questioned the decision to schedule the training at night.
