Declassified: CIA Spied on UA Students

Newly declassified documents show the CIA spied on certain University of Arizona student activist groups in the 1960s with the university’s knowledge and cooperation.

The two-page document is heavily redacted but reveals the CIA was focused on monitoring two groups: The Brown Berets and Students for a Democratic Society.

The document also mentions a recommendation to then-university president Richard Anderson Harvill that a specific topic of research be halted, though the details surrounding that are redacted.

The declassified documents are part of a large batch released in late December that span events between the 1960s and 1980s, and which were made public after congressional pressure.

Pima Sheriff Overspends by $5 Million

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is expected to overspend its budget by almost $5 million this fiscal year, according to estimates from the county administrator.

A Jan. 15 memo stated the department anticipated exceeding its budget by $2.7 million for “jail-related operations.” County Administrator Jan Lesher said an additional $2 million would likely be spent, bringing the total to $4.7 million.

The sheriff’s department has a history of overspending its budget. Outgoing county finance director Ellen Moulton said as a result, the county plans to increase the department’s baseline budget, a decision that will be made in a Feb. 18 board of supervisors meeting.

Last year, the sheriff’s department received an $11 million boost to its budget, increasing it to $170 million—more than any other county department.

Phoenix Woman Hit by Facebook Hacker

A hacker who accessed a Phoenix woman’s Facebook page locked her out of it and then tried to sell bogus items to her friends, claiming to be in desperate need of money. You can see a photo here.

Stephanie Siete said the posts claimed she would be out of town and unable to respond to anyone that sent funds. The hacker added his email address to her account, derailing Siete’s attempts at ID verification.

Last year, 41 state attorney generals sent a letter to Facebook concerning hacked accounts.
