Article Icon 1Parents Sue Over School Computer Monitoring

federal lawsuit alleges that the Marana Unified School District violated a high school student’s First Amendment rights over a threatening sentence he typed and quickly deleted from a draft email on a school-issued computer.

Security software on the computer flagged the threatening sentence and alerted school district officials, who suspended the student for 45 days.

The district noted that students and parents consent to email and Google Drive monitoring, but declined further comment.

The lawsuit, filed by the student’s parents, claims the district failed to assess whether the threat was credible and imposed an excessive penalty. They want his record cleared.

A Peoria police officer talked a suicidal woman down from a bridge over Loop 101 on Monday, a situation that led to the closure of southbound lanes for about an hour.

Police detective Frank Contreras, a trained crisis negotiator and U.S. Marine veteran, said active listening was key to the rescue.

She had a story to tell—that was apparent. A lot of people just want to be heard, and that’s what I was there to do,” he said. After she agreed not to jump, firefighters used a ladder truck to help her to safety.

Contreras urged anyone facing a mental health crisis to call the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
