Question: How did the White Mountains of Arizona get their name?
Answer: It is commonly believed that the White Mountains, as the larger area is now known, might have been derived from the conquistadors who traveled through the area in the 1700s naming the mountains “Sierras Blancas.” Mount Baldy, the highest peak in the White Mountains, also became known as Dził Łigai Sí’án (“white mountain”) to the White Mountain Apache people.
