Article Icon 1  State Toughens School Letter Grades

The state board of education voted to raise the proficiency and growth targets behind schools’ A-F letter grades, a change expected to produce fewer A-rated schools.

A state education department analysis found 50 high schools could lose A grades. The overhaul follows a June auditor general report that found the board failed to follow part of a 2018 law for eight years.

The board previously voted to eliminate bonus points, cited as a factor in why more than half of the state’s high schools earned A grades despite low proficiency levels in reading and math.

State education board executive director Sean Ross said schools will rise to meet the new standards. Leaders of Tolleson Union High School District warned the change could hurt low-income schools.

Article Icon 1Court Hack Update: 1M+ Exposed

Updated information shows a cyberattack on Arizona’s court system copied records tied to 1.3 million people, including names and Social Security numbers dating back 30 years.

Hackers got in after a court employee clicked a link in a phishing email. The court said the data came from a highly compressed backup server and may be difficult to read.

The breach also reached more than 150,000 confidential foster care review board reports and records tied to protective orders.

State Supreme Court Chief Justice Ann Timmer apologized for the breach. The court is urging affected people to freeze their credit.
