Article Icon 1Senators Press Interior on Firefighter Deaths

Arizona’s two U.S. senators asked the Interior Department on Friday to investigate how crews fought the Colorado wildfire that killed a 27-year-old Glendale firefighter and three crewmates in June.

Senators Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego want to know whether crews attacked the Knowles Fire head-on because of agency policy, not the conditions they faced. Forecasts warned of 60 mph gusts, and the crew stayed on the ground as visibility dropped to near zero.

Nick Hutcherson, a Navy veteran assigned to the Kaibab National Forest, was one of four Rifle Helitack crew members killed June 27. Interior mobilized an accident investigation team days later, but the senators say they’ve had no update since July 30.

Hutcherson’s mother is pressing for answers about her son’s death. The Senate also passed a bill this week making it easier for states to use controlled burns, and it heads to the House.

Article Icon 1Supreme Court Clears Prison Health Takeover

Justice Elena Kagan on Thursday denied Arizona’s bid to pause a court-ordered takeover of health care in its state prisons, clearing the way for an outside administrator to take control Oct. 19.

The takeover covers health care for about 25,000 inmates in Arizona’s nine state-run prisons. U.S. District Judge Roslyn Silver ordered it in February and named Annette Chambers-Smith, Ohio’s former corrections director, to run it.

The state doesn’t dispute that its prisons fall short of the legal standard, but its lawyers argued Silver reached for a takeover before trying lesser fixes and that an appointed administrator answers to no voters. Corrections officials say they’ve made significant progress since 2023.

ACLU attorney Corene Kendrick said the ruling “clears the way for a receiver to do what the state has failed to do for more than a decade.” The case dates to 2012 and Gov. Jan Brewer’s administration, spanning three administrations.

Nineteen events across Phoenix and Scottsdale, from private home tours to studio visits and designer dinners, open Oct. 6 for the sixth Desert Design Week.

The theme, Collected in Dialog, treats rooms, art, and objects as parts of larger stories rather than standalone pieces. Creator Ruth Price said she wanted small-scale chances to meet the designers and artists behind the work.

Postino co-founder Lauren Bailey will host lunch and a tour inside the midcentury Phoenix Financial Center rotunda on Central Avenue. The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art adds two community days tied to Desert Perspectives, a yearlong show drawn from its permanent collection.

Most events welcome anyone, not just design professionals, and tickets run from free to $175. Price, who started the twice-yearly event in 2024, says this round leans heavily on handmade ceramics.

Doctor unveils dark bone broth secret (avoid now)

If you think bone broth is a great way to get collagen, think again.

According to a former surgeon, animal bones are known for absorbing heavy metals.

This can potentially lead to brain fog, fatigue, or even muscle weakness.

That’s why he recommends a “collagen reset technique” instead.

To his knowledge, it’s the only technique that can help your body build its own collagen.

Anyone can do it without drinking broths.

See the technique here.

California Surgeon: “Muscle Loss in Seniors is Real, But It Doesn’t Have to Be”

If you think collagen is only for supporting healthier skin, hair, and nails, think again.

Not only does it play a role in holding the teeth in your mouth, keeping your heart walls intact, and reinforcing your gut lining…

It’s also what allows you to enjoy your favorite outdoor activities without getting tired.

But unfortunately, eating more collagen isn’t the answer.

That’s why Dr. Steven Gundry has created what he calls the “collagen reset technique.”

And to his knowledge, it’s the only technique that’s designed to help your body build its own collagen.
