AG Rivals Clash in Debate

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes and challenger Warren Petersen accused each other of lying at least 11 times Wednesday in a debate so heated the moderator threatened to cut their microphones.

Petersen targeted Mayes’ law enforcement record and pledged to drop her office’s lawsuits against the Trump administration. He also cited Mayes’ opposition to the voter-approved Secure the Border Act that makes it a state crime to cross the border illegally.

Mayes called Petersen, the Republican state Senate president, unqualified for the job and touted her lawsuits against companies that use algorithms to drive up rent and health insurance prices. On immigration, she said Arizonans support immigration enforcement and oppose mass deportation.

Both named water a top priority.

Globe Marks Flood Anniversary

Saturday will mark one year since flash floods tore through downtown Globe and parts of Miami, killing three people and causing an estimated $96 million in damage to the city.

Globe Fire Chief Gary Robinson recalled the moment floodwaters began rising, the emergency calls that followed, and the rescue efforts.

Mayor Al Gameros said Globe is accustomed to flash flooding, but not to the magnitude seen a year ago. Crews continue working to bolster stormwater protections around the city, he said.

Among the recovery projects, crews are widening and deepening waterways with $24 million in funding from the Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Summer Heat Recapped

A new chart shows daily high temperatures in the Phoenix area this summer, the area’s second-hottest ever, as temperatures hit triple digits on 89 of 92 days.

Highs reached 110 degrees or more on 39 days, peaking at 117 three times. Overnight lows didn’t drop below 90 on 27 nights.

On Thursday, storms prompted a ground stop at Sky Harbor and left about 5,700 APS customers without power at one point.

Forecasters expect highs to rebound today and Saturday before tropical moisture from Hurricane Polo off the coast of Mexico brings rain chances back Sunday through Tuesday.
