Flagstaff Eyes Denver or Salt Lake Flight

Flagstaff Pulliam Airport received an $800,000 federal grant to recruit an airline to provide daily nonstop service to Denver or Salt Lake City.

The funding comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Small Community Air Service Development Program, which selected 14 airports nationwide.

Phoenix and Dallas-Fort Worth are Flagstaff’s current nonstop destinations. SkyWest, which operates flights for Delta, and United have shown interest in the new route.

Incentives for the new route include waived landing fees, two years of office space, and marketing funds. Community partners added $548,500, bringing the total project budget to $1.3 million.

Court Expands Public Records Access

The state Supreme Court ruled that destroying a public record after a request constitutes an illegal denial of access under state law.

The case began when former University of Arizona professor Matthew Abraham sought hiring records and an audio recording that the school later destroyed. Justices said trial judges must review withholding decisions themselves rather than deferring to agencies.

The court also broadened what qualifies as “substantially prevailing” for legal fees, though it said requesters still must file suit to recover them.

The decision echoes a July ruling against Phoenix over police union records. Abraham’s case returns to a Pima County judge.

Diamondbacks Mark 2001 Title

Members of the 2001 World Series champion Arizona Diamondbacks returned to Chase Field on Saturday for a 25th anniversary celebration before Arizona’s game against the New York Yankees.

Randy Johnson walked in from the left-field bullpen to meet Curt Schilling at second base and lift the trophy. Manager Bob Brenly threw the first pitch to catcher Damian Miller, and trumpeter Dr. Jesse McGuire finished the anthem by singing after his instrument failed midway through.

The team also recognized local first responders, partnering with GOVX to pledge $50,000 for equipment.

The current Diamondbacks matched the moment, as Pavin Smith’s two-run homer walked off the Yankees. In the 2001 series, Luis Gonzalez’s Game 7 bloop hit off Mariano Rivera won the team the title in a walk-off.
