Foundry School Details Goals

The Foundry School initiative announced last week will enlist Arizona State and seven other universities to help rebuild American advanced manufacturing, according to the State Department.

Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio launched the program in Washington. The program will host 17 sessions across the participating campuses to be led by founders and CEOs of advanced manufacturers.

ASU President Michael Crow said the effort aims to keep the country competitive. “ASU has been asked to be a part of this effort to help create the conditions to make sure the United States continues to be a global leader in driving the economy of the future, and we are glad to be of service,” he said.

Other colleges selected for the program are Stanford University, Ohio State University, Vanderbilt University, Washington University in St. Louis, Penn State, Georgia Tech, and the University of Kansas.

Wolf Protections Under Study

President Trump signed an executive order Friday that could reduce federal protections for the Mexican gray wolf, reintroduced to Arizona and New Mexico in 1998.

The order directs Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to determine whether wolf recovery criteria have been met and recommend delisting or downlisting.

Arizona ranchers and U.S. Rep. Juan Ciscomani, R-Tucson, welcomed the order, arguing state wildlife officials should take the lead on oversight. Conservation groups objected to the order.

Last month, federal officials issued removal orders for two Mexican gray wolves after reported livestock losses.

Comic-Con Draws a Crowd

Tucson Comic-Con drew fans in cowboy hats, anime costumes, and Stormtrooper armor to the Tucson Convention Center over the weekend for the convention’s 17th year.

Fan clubs shared the floor with artists and gaming groups. Among them was the Arizona Ghostbusters, a nonprofit that uses proton packs and costumes to run charity drives and raffles.

Organizers counted nearly 500 exhibitors for an event that extended to the convention center’s arena, adding floor space for vendors and celebrity panels.
