Two Dead as Flood Search Continues

Searchers recovered a second body from the Grand Canyon on Monday, with officials seeking information on at least one person still unaccounted for after Saturday’s flash flood.

Search teams will continue their work today. The park halted overnight accommodations, including El Tovar and Bright Angel Lodge, and Stage 4 water restrictions began on the South Rim.

U.S. Rep. David Schweikert, R-Fountain Hills, was rafting the Colorado River with friends when the flood struck. “As you got closer it was a stunning amount of water at its peak,” Schweikert said. His group hiked to safety.

The flood destroyed nearly every footbridge over Bright Angel Creek and damaged or destroyed about 40% of the Transcanyon Waterline, with no reopening timeline. About 80 people were rescued.

Arizonan Among Nepal-Tibet Missing

A spiritual leader from Tempe is among the thousands missing after last week’s catastrophic flooding in Nepal and Tibet.

Keshava Rao Tadipatri, who serves the Sri Venkata Krishna Kshetra Temple in Tempe, was traveling with a group on a pilgrimage. He went missing after sharing a photo of himself and his travel companions on a hiking trip, family members said.

Members of Arizona’s Nepalese community—about 2,000 families—said they are horrified by the deaths and devastation.

A glacial collapse triggered the disaster, which Nepal’s disaster agency says has killed more than 900 people, with over 3,000 still missing across Nepal and Tibet.

Heat Wave Takes a Day Off

Storms swept across Arizona on Monday, bringing rain to the Valley and holding Phoenix below 100 degrees for the first time since July 18.

The relief is not expected to last. Storms were forecast to wind down later Monday, with Phoenix climbing back to about 101 today and 102 Wednesday.

Light to moderate rain streamed across Pinal, Maricopa and Gila counties Monday. On Sunday night, parts of north Phoenix and Anthem picked up more than an inch of rain.

In Southern Arizona, forecasters warned drivers to stay out of washes as storm runoff moved through.
