GOP Blasts Mayes’ Decision

Republicans accused Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes of protecting a fellow Democrat after she declined to charge Gov. Katie Hobbs in an alleged pay-to-play scheme.

U.S. Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Gilbert, who is challenging Hobbs for governor, highlighted Hobbs’ refusal of an in-person interview and lambasted Mayes’ report as a cover-up.

Senate President Warren Petersen, the GOP candidate for attorney general in November, said Mayes dragged her feet to protect a “Democratic pal.” Arizona Republican Party Chair Sergio Arellano also criticized the decision.

Mayes’ office said the investigation included multiple interviews and a review of more than 100,000 documents, with no evidence supporting a bribery charge. The Arizona Auditor General’s Office and the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office continue to investigate the allegations.

Eight Questions Make Ballot

Arizonans will decide eight statewide ballot questions on Nov. 3, covering voter ID, DEI, photo radar, and girls’ sports and school restrooms.

Proposition 144 would amend the state constitution to require every voter to show government-issued identification and ban foreign spending to influence elections.

Other questions would bar per-mile vehicle taxes, cap municipal food sales taxes, label drug cartels as terrorist organizations, and require larger school districts to spend 60% of operating budgets on classroom instruction.

Voters will not weigh in on proposed school-voucher changes after a court ruling left Proposition 212 short of signatures, and a separate legislative referral was kept off the ballot.

Hospitals Make National List

Three Arizona hospitals landed on Becker’s Hospital Review’s 2026 list of the 100 great hospitals in America.

The Arizona honorees are Banner’s academic medical centers in Phoenix and Tucson plus Phoenix Children’s. The picks were made through nominations and editorial research.

Banner’s Phoenix hospital runs the world’s busiest artificial heart program and a birthing center handling about 7,000 deliveries annually. Banner’s Tucson campus trains hundreds of residents, and Becker’s says a third of recent graduates stayed in Arizona to practice.

Phoenix Children’s treated more than 280,000 patients last year.
