Lake Mead Hits New Low

Lake Mead fell to its lowest level since the reservoir was filled, deepening the pressure on Arizona’s Colorado River supply.

The reservoir slipped to about 1,040.4 feet above sea level by Friday, dropping below its July 2022 record low.

The lake and Lake Powell, which could also reach a record low this year, are among the key water sources for more than 20 million Americans.

The federal government recently proposed potentially reducing Arizona, California, and Nevada’s annual share of Colorado River water.

Fitzgerald: Help Others Excel

Arizona Cardinals legend Larry Fitzgerald thanked his former teammates during his Pro Football Hall of Fame induction speech on Saturday night in Canton, Ohio.

“Don’t just pursue excellence for yourself. Help other people pursue it, too. That’s the part of this story that matters the most. … In the end, it’s not just about the excellence. It’s about the people who help get you there,” said Fitzgerald, whose induction capped a 17-year career spent entirely with the Cardinals.

Fitzgerald, who was joined by his son Devin to unveil his bust, concluded his remarks by advising his three sons to surround themselves with honest people.

Arizona media outlets spent the weekend revisiting a career that began with Fitzgerald’s selection as the third overall draft pick in 2004.

Heat Warnings Near Record

Phoenix spent 18 consecutive days under an extreme heat warning through Sunday, the second-longest such stretch on record for the Valley. Only July 2023 ran longer, at 29 straight warning days.

A little relief appears to be on the way. The forecast calls for temperatures to trend down through the middle of the week, falling to near or just below normal.

An AP-NORC national poll found extreme heat is reshaping daily routines, with Arizonans among those changing when they work, exercise, and go outside.

The Valley has been under an extreme heat warning since July 23, with forecasters repeatedly extending the expiration as high pressure parked over the state.
