Record-Threatening Heat through Weekend

A dangerous stretch of extreme heat is threatening all-time monthly temperature records across southern Arizona this weekend, with an Extreme Heat Warning in effect through 8 p.m. Sunday.

Forecasters expect Tucson highs near 110 to 112 degrees through Saturday, while Phoenix-area temperatures could peak near 115 to 116 degrees, with records possibly tied or broken.

The heat carries a human toll: Maricopa County has recorded 40 heat-related deaths this year, more than double last year’s pace, as outreach teams report one of their busiest weeks.

Doctors caution that heat acclimation offers only limited protection at these temperatures. Slight storm chances arrive Sunday, with cooler temperatures possible next week.

Wildlife Agencies Move to Reclassify Mexican Gray Wolf

Federal and state wildlife agencies are preparing a petition to reclassify the Mexican gray wolf from endangered to threatened under the Endangered Species Act, citing population growth.

Officials say the recovery program has neared key thresholds, with at least 319 wolves identified in the wild last year and 12 wolves recently transferred to Mexico to rebuild populations there.

A coalition of 15 regional organizations counter that the milestones mask ongoing risks. They argue the criteria are arbitrary and warn that limited genetic diversity leaves the population about as related as siblings, threatening long-term viability.

The coalition urges strengthening protections instead, pointing to at least 23 documented trapping incidents since 2022, including two Sawtooth Pack deaths, and cautioning that state-led management could weaken safeguards.

Court Affirms HOA Authority to Sue Builders

The Arizona Supreme Court ruled that homeowners’ associations may bring construction-defect claims covering common areas they own and the exteriors of individually owned homes.

The July 29 decision in Gallery Community Association v. K. Hovnanian involved an 18-unit community where the developer-created association was required to maintain common areas and unit exteriors, though homeowners owned the units.

A lower court had barred the suit, reasoning the association wasn’t a homebuyer. The Supreme Court disagreed, finding state Homeowners’ Association Dwelling Actions statutes changed common-law rules to authorize such claims.

The court reversed the summary judgment and remanded the case. Justice William Montgomery wrote the majority opinion; Chief Justice Ann Scott Timmer dissented, joined by Justice Kathryn King.
