Voters Make Primary Picks

Voters cast ballots Tuesday in this year’s statewide primary election, with Republicans choosing U.S. Rep. Andy Biggs to face incumbent Democrat Gov. Katie Hobbs in November.

In congressional races, Republicans nominated former Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb in the 5th Congressional District and former NFL kicker Jay Feely in the 1st Congressional District.

Democrats chose incumbent U.S. Rep. Greg Stanton in the 4th Congressional District, while former state lawmaker Amish Shah led former TV news anchor Marlene Galán-Woods in the 1st Congressional District.

The primary was the first held under a new July date, moved up to give officials more time to prepare general-election ballots. The U.S. Justice Department monitored polling sites in Maricopa, Pima, and Apache counties to ensure compliance with federal voting laws.

Fire Restrictions Rolled Back

Increased monsoon activity led Grand Canyon National Park and others to roll back fire restrictions across much of the state.

The park’s South Rim dropped to Stage 1 restrictions, letting visitors light campfires in designated rings at maintained campgrounds. On the North Rim, Stage 2 restrictions will remain for the rest of the 2026 season because of limited water resources.

Flagstaff eased its rules to permit fire pits and fireworks, though smoking remains banned in city parks and on trails.

Prescott National Forest lifted Stage 1 fire restrictions and a ban on recreational shooting.

Law Bans School Lunch Additives 

A state law taking effect this school year bans 11 ingredients from foods and snacks served or sold on campus during the school day.

Parents can still pack whatever they want for their own children, although homemade birthday and holiday treats with banned ingredients can no longer be shared classwide.

The Arizona Healthy Schools Act, signed in April 2025, prohibits additives associated with ultra-processed foods. Included on the list are synthetic dyes, potassium bromate, titanium dioxide, and brominated vegetable oil.

Districts statewide have spent the summer reformulating menus, with some creating approved-snack lists for classrooms and student stores.
