Article Icon 1Monsoon Arrives, Bringing Long-Awaited Rain

Monsoon moisture is moving into the Phoenix area this weekend, with rain chances rising Sunday and continuing through the week after an unusually dry season that left the Valley well below average.

Before the rain, forecasters warned of gusty outflows and blowing dust. Experts said the prolonged dryness could worsen dust storms, raising health risks, including Valley Fever, for vulnerable residents.

In Northern Arizona, the National Weather Service called it a robust start roughly a week late. The moisture should aid crews battling the Pocket Fire near Sedona.

However, meteorologists cautioned the rain brings dangers too, particularly flash flooding over wildfire burn scars. Residents were urged to keep emergency alerts active and prepare evacuation go-bags.

Article Icon 1Online Gambling Operators Ordered to Cease Activity

The Arizona Department of Gaming issued cease-and-desist orders to five online betting operators, accusing them of running illegal gambling in the state and putting consumers at risk.

The notices went to BetOpenly, Bookmaker, Club WPT Online Poker, Kutt Inc., and Raffle Creator. Officials cited alleged felony-level conduct, including promoting illegal gambling, illegal enterprise control, and money laundering.

Several operators were accused of allowing people under age 21 to participate. Department Director Jackie Johnson said the agency’s priority is protecting Arizonans and putting unlicensed operators on notice.

Officials said next steps could include criminal charges, civil action, or recovering lost funds. Residents were urged to confirm operators appear on the department’s approved list before betting.

Article Icon 1Parasitic Stomach Illness Reaches Arizona

Health officials are tracking a nationwide outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a foodborne parasitic infection linked to fresh produce, with hundreds of cases confirmed across dozens of states this summer.

Arizona has recorded 10 cases as of July 7, while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has logged 843 confirmed domestic cases since May 1, noting the true total is likely higher.

Reported symptoms include weeks of abdominal cramping, nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea. Physicians say the infection is treatable with antibiotics but can recur if left untreated.

Pima County health officials urged providers to test symptomatic patients. Experts recommend washing off fruits and vegetables and practicing good hygiene by washing with soap and water, since alcohol-based sanitizer does not kill the parasite.
