Teen Hiker Dies Amid Heat Wave

An 18-year-old hiker died from heat illness near the Bright Angel Trail at the Grand Canyon last week, as triple-digit temperatures grip the state.

The teenager was on a day hike from the South Rim to the Colorado River. A rescue helicopter responded, but the teen did not survive.

Triple-digit heat is forecast across most of Arizona through the work week, with Phoenix and Tucson both expected to top 105°F. Nationally, a coast-to-coast heat wave is forecast for the week.

Antivenom Added to Emergency Flights

BannerAir highlighted the benefits of administering rattlesnake and scorpion antivenom mid-flight, allowing bite victims in rural areas to receive treatment before reaching a hospital.

The helicopter service, which operates across Arizona, equipped its fleet with antivenom through a partnership with Rare Disease Therapeutics. In one case, a Valley man bitten by a rattlesnake received treatment in under an hour from the time of the bite.

Arizona averages about 250 rattlesnake bites and thousands of scorpion stings per year, with children especially at risk of bites and severe health effects.

Poll: State’s Top Hospitals

Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix led the 2026 Ranking Arizona public voting for the state’s top acute care hospitals.

Banner–University Medical Center Phoenix came in second, followed by Tucson Medical Center and Phoenix Children’s Hospital. You can find the Top 10 here.
