South Tucson Ends Grocery Tax

South Tucson eliminated its 1.5% grocery tax effective July 1 in a bid to attract a new supermarket to a community that hasn’t had one since its only Food City closed.

A divided city council voted this spring to kill the tax despite concerns from staff that the move would amount to roughly $120,000 a year and eliminate one of two revenue sources.

With 4,500 residents and a median income below the state average, South Tucson—a city fully encircled by Tucson—has struggled with food access.

Council supporters of the tax cut also touted the savings for residents, while council members opposed to the measure said the city can’t afford the lost tax revenue.

Speed Cameras Catch 30,000

Phoenix’s new speed-enforcement cameras logged 30,000 violations in two months—roughly one citation every three minutes—since going live after a 30-day warning period.

The city installed the cameras in late February and began issuing tickets in late March. During the warning period, the cameras logged more than 70,000 speeding events.

Phoenix hired Verra Mobility to resurrect its speed camera program that was discontinued in 2019. The company also handles mailing citations.

Some legal experts question the enforceability of the tickets, while residents appear split over the use of the system.

Businesswoman Leads Pro Soccer Bid

Mesa entrepreneur Vicki Mayo is determined to bring professional soccer to Arizona, backing an effort to build a 25,000-seat stadium in Mesa.

The stadium would serve as home to a National Women’s Soccer League team and, possibly, a Major League Soccer team as the leagues eye possible expansions and shifts.

Mayo said Arizona is “more than ready” for an NWSL club, pointing to a built-in fan base that includes more than 55,000 registered youth players across 45-plus clubs statewide.

In November, the Mesa City Council approved the formation of the Palo District, a planned development featuring restaurants, retail, residences, and a multi-use stadium.
