Article Icon 1 Water Crisis in Focus

A report examines the water supply emergency facing the Phoenix metro area, following record heat to start the year.

With 87% of the state now in drought, the water storage numbers are stark: Lake Mead sits at just 28.5% capacity, and Lake Powell is close behind at 26.2%. The Colorado River—which feeds the Central Arizona Project and supplies water to millions—is flowing at roughly 33% of historical norms.

Phoenix remains under a Stage 1 Water Alert, with reduced outdoor watering schedules and ongoing public education campaigns on conservation.

A month ago, Arizona, California, and Nevada announced a temporary plan to conserve Colorado River water pending a long-term agreement among all basin states.

Article Icon 1 GOP Battles To Hold 1st CD

Republican candidates are busy campaigning in the 1st Congressional District, hoping to keep the Scottsdale-anchored swing district in the GOP column.

With current U.S. Rep. David Schweikert, R-Scottsdale, not seeking re-election to run for governor, Democrat hopefuls are also striving to win a district that in 2024 backed Donald Trump for president and Democrat Ruben Gallego for U.S. Senate.

Among the GOP hopefuls are former Arizona Cardinals kicker Jay Feely, Joseph Chaplik, and John Trobough. Feely has secured endorsements from President Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson.

The field of Democrats includes two candidates who ran for the seat in 2024, Marlene Galán-Woods and Amish Shah. Shah won the 2024 primary before losing to Schweikert in the general election.

Bisbee received a spot on National Geographic’s list of the most charming towns in America.

The copper town turned arts colony in the Mule Mountains of Cochise County was one of 17 towns nationwide selected.

The recognition spotlights Bisbee’s beauty, temperate climate, arts, and music. The article calls the town “a colorful shock in the desert thanks to the surrounding orange peaks of the Mule Mountains and the turquoise, red, and yellow Victorian-style storefronts lining the streets.”
