Arizona Job Growth Turns Positive Again

Arizona added 13,300 jobs year over year in April, the state’s first positive employment growth in eight months.

The turnaround ends a prolonged slowdown driven by high interest rates and a construction pullback. The report comes from the Common Sense Institute Arizona, which has tracked the slowdown since mid-2025.

Economists cite easing borrowing costs and renewed semiconductor investment—particularly from TSMC and Intel in the Phoenix metro—as the key drivers behind Arizona’s improving job picture.

First Heat Death of 2026 Confirmed

Maricopa County health officials have confirmed its first heat-related death of 2026—an older adult male—following a historic March heatwave that sent multiple days above 100°F. Then, during the second week of May, the National Weather Service issued a formal extreme heat warning for the entire Valley.

Heat kills more Arizonans each year than any other natural disaster. Officials are urging residents to check on elderly neighbors, use cooling centers, and avoid outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours.

Maricopa County recorded more than 600 heat deaths in 2023 and 2024. With triple digits expected to return next week after this weekend’s brief cooldown, health officials say outreach to unhoused and elderly residents is the immediate priority.

Beds for 65 Arizona Kids

Volunteers with Sleep in Heavenly Peace built and delivered beds this weekend to 65 children in Phoenix, Tucson, and Flagstaff who otherwise sleep on the floor.

The Phoenix chapter is expanding statewide, with crews in all three cities building wooden frames and delivering them with mattresses—free of charge to every family.

The nonprofit operates in all 50 states and has delivered more than 100,000 beds nationally. Saturday’s Arizona effort was among the largest coordinated single-day builds the organization has attempted in the state.
