Article Icon 1Arizona Agrees to Water Cuts

Arizona joined California and Nevada in proposing to cut more than 3.2 million acre-feet of water through 2028 to stabilize the Colorado River and avoid federal intervention.

The plan calls for major reductions by the three states, with Arizona foregoing one of the largest shares of about 760,000 acre-feet per year in 2027 and 2028.

Officials say the cuts are needed to protect critically low levels at Lake Mead and Lake Powell, which are essential for water delivery and hydropower across the Southwest.

The proposal has been submitted for federal approval, with details on how reductions will be split between agriculture and cities still to be determined.

Four people were critically injured and five others were hurt in a head-on crash involving a UTV and a pickup truck on an unpaved road near Lake Pleasant on Sunday.

Seven people—mostly teens ages 16 to 18, including a teenage driver—were in the Utility Task Vehicle. Two adults were in the pickup. The most severely injured were in the UTV and airlifted to hospitals.

Authorities said dust and reduced visibility may have contributed to the crash, which took place on French Creek Road, about one mile east of Castle Hot Springs Road.

A German shepherd killed a rabid bobcat suspected in a series of attacks that injured three people in the Prescott area beginning Sunday evening.

The final incident came on Monday morning when the bobcat attacked a man walking with his German shepherd. The dog “heroically intervened, successfully fending off and killing the bobcat,” the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office said. The dog and the owner were treated for their injuries.

In earlier attacks, a man suffered serious injuries near Inscription Canyon Drive on Sunday night, and a woman was injured earlier Monday morning.

Authorities think the same bobcat was responsible for each attack and a separate attack on a dog, and they’re asking the public to report any additional cases to Arizona Game and Fish.
