Prescott on May 9 will recreate the 1876 Territorial Championship baseball game, commemorating the 150th anniversary of Fort Whipple soldiers and a Prescott team playing at what’s now the Yavapai County Courthouse Plaza.

The event will feature a vintage-style game at Kuebler Field, echoing the original series that set the foundation for the community’s baseball future.

The game was one of the first photographed in Arizona as baseball spread through mining camps and military communities during the territory’s late-1800s boom.

Prescott lost the game and, afterward, a local newspaper reported the team demanded a rematch and sent for ‘ringers’ from Boston, though historians think they were likely locals in borrowed uniforms.

Article Icon 1Rare Cat Makes Record Trek

A male ocelot set a record by traveling more than 100 miles across southern Arizona, the longest documented trek for the species.

Over 388 days, the elusive cat navigated rugged terrain and crossed multiple highways, appearing only in scattered nighttime trail camera sightings.

Youth in the Tohono O’odham Nation’s San Xavier District named the cat Himdam, meaning “traveler.”

Ocelots are among the most endangered wild cats in the U.S., with small, fragmented populations threatened by habitat loss and vehicle collisions.
