Child Murder Trial Suspended

A couple accused in the child abuse death of their 7-year-old daughter was released from custody under electronic monitoring due to delays in the case.

Judge Patricia Starr ordered that former Phoenix detective Germayne Cunningham and his wife, Lisa, may live in Maricopa County pending a future evidentiary hearing.

The couple’s murder trial began last fall but was delayed over questions about evidence handling by the Goodyear Police Department.

Starr said she may dismiss the case or declare a mistrial depending on information revealed at the upcoming hearing.

Businesses Cheer Smog Ruling

Phoenix-area businesses praised a ruling that pollution from Mexico and other out-of-state sources is the main reason Phoenix continues to fail federal air standards.

The decision spares local businesses from more costly regulations while also affirming the effectiveness of local emission cuts over the decades.

The Arizona Chamber of Commerce applauded the decision, pointing to studies showing about 80% of the area’s ozone now comes from outside the region, including international sources and wildfire smoke.

Separately, state Attorney General Kris Mayes joined a lawsuit challenging the EPA’s efforts to roll back gas standards for vehicles.

ASU Alum Wins Oscar

A film producer who graduated from Arizona State University is now an Oscar winner.

David Breschel was the producer of the Best Live Action Short Film winner The Singers. He and director Sam Davis adapted the film from an 1850s Russian short story, using first-time actors and no script.

The 18-minute film follows a group of men at a bar reflecting on life’s highs and lows before breaking into an impromptu singing competition. Watch the trailer.

Breschel called the moment surreal as he celebrated alongside Hollywood icons. The honor was also notable because the category produced a rare Oscar tie.
