Food Stamps Funding Fast Food

A study found that food stamp recipients spent $41.4 million at fast-food restaurants in Arizona over two years, one of the highest amounts among the nine mostly Democratic-run states that allow the spending.

Arizona ranked behind California. Other states that allow food stamp spending at fast-food restaurants are Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Rhode Island, and Virginia.

U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, cited the spending in proposing the McSCUSE ME Act, seeking changes that would restrict the fast-food spending to grocery chains with hot food bars, end spousal eligibility, and expand reporting requirements.

Mall Reopens After Storm Damage

Severe weather in Phoenix caused a partial roof collapse at Desert Sky Mall on Wednesday evening, forcing a temporary closure. The mall reopened Thursday, with some retailers remaining shut.

The same storms triggered localized flooding, street closures, and some power outages in the area.

Officials reported several road closures due to flooding early Thursday in Maricopa County, including parts of 19th Avenue, Desert Hills Drive, and Lower Buckeye Road.

Meanwhile, the Arizona Snowbowl ski resort in Flagstaff reported 37 inches of snow this week and opened for the season on Thursday, a day earlier than planned.
