Spirit Airlines will end service at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Jan. 8 to focus on stronger routes.

The budget carrier will also discontinue service in Milwaukee, St. Louis, and Rochester, New York.

The airline is making the cuts amid its second bankruptcy filing in two years, citing weak domestic leisure travel demand and adverse market conditions.

Spirit’s passenger traffic at Sky Harbor has fallen more than 60% this year, with about 113,000 travelers through September.

Arizona Autism will switch to using more independent contractors without benefits, with plans to lay off roughly 2,800 staff in December.

The Phoenix-based autism services provider says an undisclosed number of staff will be offered contract positions, and it expects no major service disruptions.

The organization cited evolving market conditions, while advocacy groups pointed to potential federal Medicaid cuts.

The layoffs raised concerns among families who rely on the organization’s in-home care and therapy services for children with autism and other developmental disabilities.

Federal emergency response teams are conducting on-site damage assessments in Tempe following the Oct. 13 microburst that damaged more than 1,000 homes and 80 businesses.

Staff from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Small Business Administration are assessing the community’s disaster aid needs.

“Our longstanding relationships with state, county, and federal governments as well as nonprofits have benefited our whole community during our time of need, and I thank them for standing alongside us,” Tempe Mayor Corey Woods said.

Meanwhile, state Attorney General Kris Mayes filed her 30th multistate lawsuit against the Trump administration, this one involving FEMA funding.
