University of Arizona tennis player Jay Friend made school history, becoming the first Wildcat to win an ATP Tour Challenger tournament and an Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Championship in the same season.

Friend won the Fairfield Challenger championship match on Sunday in California, defeating Pepperdine’s Edward Winter in a tournament that also featured some veteran professional players.

Friend’s wins build on his success during last spring’s college season, when he earned First Team All-American honors and the ITA Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award. He will compete next at the Lincoln Challenger in Lincoln, Nebraska.
