Sickouts Lead to Flight Delays

A small number of flight delays and cancellations hit Arizona and other U.S. airports due in part to “sickouts” by some air traffic controllers, among the employees required to keep working during the partial federal government shutdown.

Sky Harbor in Phoenix reported about 50 delayed flights and four cancellations as of 2 p.m. Tuesday, while Burbank Airport in California temporarily shut down its control tower.

Republicans and Democrats sought to use the delays as leverage in ongoing federal budget talks, with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy saying, “In a job that’s already stressful, this shutdown has put way more stress on our controllers.”

Professors Oppose Compact

The University of Arizona Faculty Senate voted to oppose a proposed compact between the school and the Trump administration on college reforms.

U of A is one of nine universities asked to provide feedback on the proposal by Oct. 20.

The compact seeks to reward schools that follow federal policies on tuition limits, a ban on DEI programs, admissions criteria, and more.

U of A leaders have yet to comment on the proposal. In Texas, the chair of the University of Texas’ governing board said he was honored that the school was among those selected.

The TikTok data security center in Scottsdale and Jones Studio in Tempe are among the spaces that made Arizona Real Estate’s list of the state’s 10 coolest offices.

Others listed include Dutch Bros in Tempe, with an arcade and pickleball court, and Bond in Phoenix, offering a glass-enclosed treehouse boardroom and spa-inspired fitness center.

The Scottsdale TikTok office features wellness rooms and a cantina serving its 400 employees. Jones Studio was praised as a “living expression” of the design company’s ethos.

A 2025 study on the nation’s workspaces found that offices with flexible layouts and enhanced amenities report higher employee satisfaction.
