Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham said, “It’s always good to win ugly,” following the team’s 38-19 season-opening victory over Northern Arizona on Saturday.

ASU was flagged 12 times for penalties, including on consecutive plays where a 75-yard touchdown catch by Raleek Brown and a 64-yard catch by Malik McClain were called back.

Meanwhile, Arizona defeated Hawaii 40-6 behind a defense that forced five turnovers, while quarterback Noah Fifita threw a touchdown pass and ran for another.

Teen violence trended upward across the Phoenix Valley last year, with Mesa seeing one of the largest surges.

Mental health worker Katey McPherson and community advocate Bridget Vega attribute part of the increase to pandemic-related isolation and a lack of structure for teens. The pair praises law enforcement’s efforts to address the problem.

The most common teen crimes in Mesa include simple assault, disorderly conduct, vandalism, and liquor and weapons violations, with many youth citing boredom as a factor.

Juvenile court data show that the largest increase in youth crime in Mesa is occurring in zip codes 85207 and 85208.
