Rising housing costs have pushed Arizona’s cost of living above the national average.

The annual State of Housing in Arizona study also reported that 22% of homeowners and 54% of renters are considered cost-burdened, paying more than 30% of their income for housing.

Local wage growth in numerous occupations, including office work, sales, food service, transportation, and management, lags the increase in housing costs, the report said.

The disparity led to record eviction and homelessness rates last year, despite Arizona’s housing construction reaching a record high in 2023 and municipalities investing millions in affordable housing developments.

Maryvale High students returned to in-person classes on Monday, about a week after a 16-year-old boy was fatally stabbed in a classroom, allegedly by a fellow student using a pocketknife.

The school announced plans to increase police presence and review safety measures, including its new advanced weapons detection system.

After the stabbing, the school was temporarily placed on lockdown, and students shifted to remote learning for the remainder of the week.

The suspect, Chris Daniel Aguilar, 16, is expected to be charged as an adult with second-degree murder. Police say the stabbing followed a dispute over a stolen firearm.

Chandler teen Brad Wu was awarded a $50,000 Davidson Fellows Scholarship for creating a brain-controlled robotic arm to help stroke patients regain movement.

Wu, 17, a senior at Arizona College Prep High School, began developing the lightweight device last summer, inspired by a relative’s stroke and the daily struggles of stroke victims.

Davidson Fellows Scholarships are among the nation’s most prestigious prizes for students under 18, and the program this year celebrated its 25th anniversary by awarding a record $825,000 to 21 students nationwide.
