The Scottsdale Fire Department used e-bikes in a weekend mountain rescue to reach a hiker suffering from heat exhaustion on the Saguaro Canyon Trail.

Crews covered more than 2.5 miles in under 15 minutes to reach the woman, demonstrating how e-bikes can significantly speed response times.

The woman received on-site treatment and was airlifted off the mountain by a Phoenix Police Department Firebird 10 helicopter crew. She declined to go to a hospital.

Article Icon 1Timing of Detention Visits Sparks Dispute

State Rep. Greg Stanton, D-Tempe, was denied entry to a federal immigration detention center in Eloy after failing to give advance notice of his visit.

Stanton was the latest Democratic lawmaker seeking to challenge a U.S. Department of Homeland Security policy that requires lawmakers and others to give a week’s notice before visiting detention centers.

Another lawmaker, state Rep. Yassamin Ansari, D-Phoenix, claimed that her permission to visit the same center was revoked at the last minute. Federal officials refuted Ansari’s claim, saying she failed to show up for her scheduled visit.

A Phoenix Valley man who lost sensation in his legs is driving again thanks to support from a local company.

Tempe-based Driving to Independence helped Skip Wilkins receive specialized training to use hand controls for braking and accelerating, allowing his safe return to the road.

Brianna Snyder, one of the company’s instructors, said, “A lot of my clients, the last time I see them is them driving off into the sunset. That gives me goosebumps. It makes me happy.

Wilkins, diagnosed with hereditary peripheral neuropathy, has been back on the road for almost a year.
