$500K Spent on Vegas School Conference

A Phoenix-area school district spent nearly $500,000 on a Las Vegas conference for 197 staffers, weeks after cutting student bus services to save money.

Dysart Superintendent John Croteau defended the spending, calling the Solution Tree conference an investment in improved classroom instruction and district decision-making.

Gannett to Close 117-Worker Print Shop

Gannett, the parent company of The Arizona Republic and USA Today, will lay off 117 workers under a plan to close its Phoenix print shop and shift the work to Las Vegas, Nevada.

“We deeply appreciate the years of service our knowledgeable, skilled staff has dedicated to our Phoenix facility and the local community,” a Gannett spokesman said.

The company said the move will cut costs and potentially fund more journalism endeavors.

Earlier this year, Gannett announced the closure of its 109-worker print operations in Sterling Heights, Michigan.

Plan Aims to Boost K-12 Reading

Read On Arizona published its Arizona Literacy Plan 2030, billed as a blueprint for how the state can address poor reading skills among K-12 students.

The plan emphasizes teacher training, preschool access, high-quality materials, and reduced absenteeism.

The plan also calls for an increase in the number of literacy coaches in the state from 34 to 135 by 2028.

The plan was developed over 18 months of talks with schools, parents, state education leaders and nonprofit organizations such as Read Better Be Better.
