Woman Killed in Police Shootout

A woman who fled a traffic stop and opened fire on Pinal County Sheriff’s deputies was fatally shot by officers Thursday evening in San Tan Valley.

Melissa Mills, 46, of Apache Junction, allegedly rammed a police sergeant’s car with her vehicle, crashed shortly afterward, and then fired at least one round that struck a patrol car.

An officer received minor injuries from glass shards. A passenger in Mills’ vehicle was hospitalized for injuries and subsequently arrested on a traffic warrant.

The officers were placed on paid administrative leave as the investigation continues.

Phoenix Resumes Cool Pavement Program

Phoenix is moving forward with its controversial cool pavement program, applying a heat-reflective coating on more than 140 miles of roadway so far.

The program restarted after being paused last year over issues of cost, effectiveness, and questions about a previous coating product.

Arizona State University researchers found the coating provides little air temperature relief, increases heat for pedestrians due to its reflective surface, and costs about three times as much as a traditional coating.

Officials who support the program say the coating should last about eight years and help protect the road’s foundation by keeping the surface cooler.

Mom Sings Again After Lung Transplant

A 41-year-old Phoenix Valley singer regained her voice after a successful double lung transplant at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix.

Ali Briskey said she felt “stripped of her identity” as scleroderma led to lung disease during her second pregnancy, leaving her dependent on oxygen and in need of a transplant.

Briskey received her new lungs just three days after she was added to the transplant waiting list.

“It brings me so much joy,” Briskey said. “We sing a goodnight song as a family every night.”
