Article Icon 1Some Arizonans Will Get Medical Debt Relief

Gov. Katie Hobbs announced the government’s partnership with nonprofit Undue Medical Debt will result in the cancellation of $429 million in medical debt for more than 352,000 low-income Arizonans.

The effort involves negotiating with medical providers to buy and erase medical debt for a fraction of its value, using federal American Rescue Plan of 2021 funds.

Eligible people include those who earn up to 400% of the federal poverty level or owe at least 5% of their income in medical bills.

Qualifying residents will receive a letter from Undue Medical Debt notifying them that some or all of their debt has been erased.

The payments are part of an initiative aimed at erasing $2 billion in unpaid medical bills for up to 1 million Arizona residents.

A “high-end” burglary took place at the Scottsdale home of Ketel Marte, likely while the Arizona Diamondbacks infielder played in the MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday in Atlanta.

Jewelry and numerous personal items were stolen from the unoccupied home. Police found evidence of forced entry.

The break-in is the latest from around the country targeting homes of professional athletes, including NFL star quarterbacks Joe Burrow and Patrick Mahomes.

In February, seven Chilean nationals linked to a South American theft ring were charged with stealing more than $2 million worth of property from various professional athletes.

An Arizona meteorite hunter found 10 stones after traveling to Georgia to help track down fragments from the June 26 meteor that hit south of Atlanta.

Prescott resident Robert Ward, who maintains one of the world’s largest meteorite museums in his home, set off on the search after seeing TV footage of the fireball.

Ward used undisclosed technology to identify probable fragment sites. The biggest rock he found—now on display at his museum—weighs 2.58 ounces.

NASA said the meteor entered Earth’s atmosphere at 30,000 mph before breaking up, releasing energy equal to 20 tons of TNT. A small fragment that hit the roof of a house in Georgia is under study by scientists.
