State Budget Fight Risks Shutdown

Arizona could be headed toward an unprecedented government shutdown after Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs vetoed two budget packages drafted by House Republicans.

One proposal laid out a comprehensive spending plan packed with conservative priorities, while the other, dubbed a “skinny budget,” kept current funding levels in place to buy more time for talks before a Monday deadline.

Hobbs accused Republicans of wasting time with “reckless and partisan budgets.” Republican House Speaker Steve Montenegro blamed Hobbs for a possible government shutdown.

How a shutdown would affect state agencies remains unclear. Functions such as public safety and prisons would continue to operate, officials say.

Sheriff Joins Trump Advisory Team

The advisory council was created in 2002 to address threats such as terrorism, natural disasters, and cyberattacks. The panel will convene its first meeting this year on July 2 in Washington, D.C.

Fan Banned After Marte Comment

Arizona Diamondbacks star infielder Ketel Marte became visibly upset during Tuesday night’s game against the White Sox in Chicago after a fan allegedly shouted a comment about Marte’s late mother.

Marte’s mother, Elpidia Valdez, died in a 2017 car crash, prompting him to temporarily leave the team and return to the Dominican Republic.

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo and shortstop Geraldo Perdomo consoled Marte on the field. “It was a terrible moment. Fans are nasty and fans go too far sometimes,” said Lovullo, who declined to repeat the fan’s comment.

The fan was ejected and permanently banned for verbal abuse. The comment was made during Marte’s seventh-inning at-bat. In the first inning, Marte hit his 15th home run of the season.
