Question: Which Arizona pioneer lived in a fortress-like home and became a local legend for thwarting Apache attacks?
Answer: Pete Kitchen. As troops left the region for the Civil War, many settlers followed, abandoning an area that had become a hotspot during the Apache Wars. Kitchen stayed put, defending his Nogales area ranch home against numerous Apache raids, during which much of his livestock and his son were killed.
