Ongoing military training in the Phoenix metro area includes simulated gunfire, low-flying helicopters, and controlled explosions during periods of darkness.

The training, which runs through Saturday, is unrelated to immigration enforcement.

Fifty people from 20 countries were granted American citizenship during a naturalization ceremony Friday at a federal courthouse in Tucson. 

Some of those in attendance shared their journey to citizenship.

Magistrate Judge Michael Ambri presided over the naturalization ceremony, saying of the new citizens, “We are united by the highest ideals of this great country.”

Nationwide, more than 800,000 people became U.S. citizens in the 2024 fiscal year.

A year after nearly dying in Arizona’s Superstition Mountains, a man’s survival story has gone viral, gaining more than 1 million views on Instagram.

Colt Johnson was visiting from Idaho when he became overwhelmed by the heat and collapsed. Before falling unconscious, he managed to fire a series of six gunshots into the air. 

Retired firefighter John Zeto found him, stabilizing Johnson, hydrating him, and returning him to safety. “Colt was not supposed to die that day,” Zeto said.

The two men still keep in touch. “John was definitely an answer to prayers,” Johnson said. “He was my own personal angel, for sure. I owe that guy my life.
